What is Delta 8 THC Distillate?
First, we'll give you a quick primer on delta 8 and 9 THC. Delta 9 THC is the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in the cannabis plant and causes the "high" feeling and euphoric effects. Delta 8 THC is a secondary cannabinoid and isomer of delta 9 THC. While their molecular structures are similar, their bonding method differs, making delta-8 less potent than delta-9.
While delta 8 is psychoactive, it's more relaxing and typically doesn't cause the same unwanted side effects as delta 9 THC, like dizziness, mood changes, anxiety, and drowsiness. However, delta-8 still contains beneficial pain-killing, anti-nausea, and anti-anxiety properties. One recent study surveyed the feelings of users after taking delta 8, with the following results:
- Relaxation: 71%
- Euphoria: 68%
- Pain relief 55%
Furthermore, 74% and 83% did not experience anxiety or paranoia, respectively.
Of course, there's still a need for more sufficient data regarding delta 8 THC; however, because it may offer the wellness benefits of cannabis without the same strong psychoactive effects, it's been steadily growing in popularity.
The first step when making hemp-derived delta-8 THC is to make CBD crude oil. Next, the CBD crude is processed and distilled, and the CBD is isolated from the rest of the cannabinoids. Once a pure CBD extract, 99%+ purity, is created, the CBD goes through isomerization, whereby the CBD converts to Delta 8 THC. Isomerization requires chemical agents to change the molecules from CBD to Delta 8 THC. After isomerization, the solution goes through a distillation and refinement process to remove residual solvents or unwanted molecules. The result is pure delta-8 distillate.
A clear or light-colored delta-8 distillate has a high viscosity and is usually better quality than a dark amber distillate, which can indicate the presence of impurities. The best distillate on the market will look somewhere between clear and amber and comes from hemp grown on farms that don't use heavy metals or harsh pesticides. At Delta 8 Pro, we use a third-party lab to test all our products and distillates to ensure they're of the highest quality possible.
Delta 8 Distillate vs. Concentrates
Naturally, most consumers who have never tried delta-8 distillate have many questions. One common question is about the difference between distillates and concentrates. Essentially, the differences between the two lie in their potency levels.
Concentrates typically have around an 85% potency level. However, a distillate has a higher concentration and purity level, closer to 90-99%. Furthermore, a distillate may contain small quantities of other minor cannabinoids.
Many concentrates made from cannabis extract retain some of the plant's natural terpenes. So, unlike a distillate, they're not flavorless or odorless. Instead, some describe their scent as floral, spicy, and earthy, similar to hash oil, although it depends on the specific strain used to make the concentrate.
Distillates, a popular product, can be mixed with terpenes or other carrier oils (like hemp seed oil, coconut oil, MCT oil, etc.) to create new products. For example, tinctures are typically made with MCT oil. The carrier oil improves the viscosity of the distillate and makes it easy for accurate dosing. However, Dab products made with distillate do not contain any carrier oils, only terpenes to enhance flavor and effect.
How to Use Delta 8 THC Distillate
Like other cannabis products, you can use delta 8 THC distillate in many ways, depending on your preference. Delta 8 THC distillate will solidify at low temperatures, so you may have to apply heat until it raises the temperature high enough to create a more liquid-like consistency. Some prefer using a hot water bath; others recommend alternative heat sources, like a heat gun.
One of the most popular ways to use hemp-derived delta 8 THC distillate is with a vape pen. For example, buy a delta 8 THC distillate vape cartridge with your favorite battery or a disposable device. You can also purchase hemp flower infused with delta 8 THC for smoking in a joint, blunt, pipe, etc.
Another convenient way to purchase delta-8 distillate is in a pre-filled glass syringe. The distillate is a very thick, high-viscosity oil, so you must heat the glass syringe and press the plunger to dispense the distillate. Other than that, the glass syringe makes it a breeze to use delta 8 THC distillate in a variety of different ways, including:
- Smoking delta 8 THC distillate in a dab rig
- Sublingual dosing (placing a few drops under your tongue)
- Consuming it in food or edibles
- Infusing flower with delta-8 distillate
Delta 8 Pro has a broad selection of delta-8 THC distillate syringes in deliciously aromatic and potent flavors like Blueberry Kush, Strawberry Cough, OG Kush, Pineapple Express, and so many more!
How Delta 8 THC Works in Your System
Delta 8 THC interacts with the human body differently, depending on how the individual consumes the Delta-8. When vaping delta-8, the molecule immediately enters the bloodstream and interacts with the CB1 receptors.
This interaction promotes a series of chemical signals in the brain and central nervous system, which cause the user to experience changes in mood, perception, anxiety, and other feelings. Hopefully, in a positive manner! When eating delta-8 THC, the molecule must be metabolized in your body before it enters the bloodstream. This process can take up to 2 hours, so edibles can take a while to kick in. When cannabinoids are eaten and metabolized in the body, a metabolite called 11-Hydroxy THC is formed. 11 Hydroxy THC has an affinity for the CB1 and CB2 receptors and is very psychoactive. When ingesting edibles, follow the instructions to avoid getting too high. Lastly, delta 8 THC interacts with your body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) and may trigger beneficial responses that could help you:
- Reduce nausea and vomiting
- Stimulate your appetite
- Manage discomfort or pain
- Relieve anxious feelings
Of course, everyone is different, and the effects you feel from delta-8 distillate (and other hemp products) will vary.
How to Make Edibles with Delta 8 Distillate
Making edibles with delta 8 THC distillate is a fun way to enjoy the positive effects of this cannabinoid. Below, we'll explain how you can make a delicious treat with a delta-8 distillate!
Step One: Determine how you'll use your delta 8 THC distillate. Find a recipe, gather the ingredients, and follow the recipe.
Step Two: Heat some water. Place your glass syringe or jar of distillate in the warm water to make it softer and easier to dispense.
Step Three: Determine your dosage. Your product has a lab report showing the percentage (potency) of active molecules per gram of distillate. Usually around 80-90% potency. Meaning 1 gram of distillate will have 80-90% Delta 8 THC, 800-900mg. The typical dosage for a human is between 5mg-25mg, depending on the individual. So, for example, if you wanted to make an edible with 5mg of delta-8 THC, you could yield approximately 160 to 180 5mg edibles from 1g of delta-8 distillate.
Step Four: Add the correct amount of delta-8 THC distillate to your recipe after deciding on a suitable dosage. We recommend adding the distillate to butter or oil and infusing those two ingredients together instead of adding the distillate directly into the other ingredients. Please note that distillate is not water-soluble and will not disperse or dissolve in water. For liquid infusions, we recommend our water-soluble solution called Aquanoid. Edibles are easy and fun to make. Be sure to keep them away from kids and pets.
